Ed Woodward and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez have met in Los Angeles to exchange gifts and the former simply couldn’t hide his smile.
The two clubs have developed a fractious relationship ever since Madrid failed to complete the signing of David de Gea back in 2015 following a series of documentation issues.
Woodward once again left the La Liga champions flat-footed this summer by using a proposed deal for Alvaro Morata as a smokescreen for signing Romelu Lukaku, leaving Madrid to sell him to Chelsea for £20m less than they would have expected.
Nevertheless, the pair met during Manchester United’s pre-season win over Real Madrid on Sunday, with Perez handing him a shirt signed by the Madrid squad and Woodward returning the act of goodwill with a silver plague inscribed with the date of the clash between the two sides, and you can see the pictures here.
Needless to say, Woodward has missed a great opportunity by not presenting Perez with a new fax machine as a gift instead, or maybe a big framed portrait of David de Gea smiling.
In all seriousness, for all the pleasantries being shared between the two, supporters shouldn’t anticipate any further contact regarding deals, especially with Mourinho publicly stamping out any chance of De Gea moving away this summer.
