Manchester United held talks with Ander Herrera‘s representatives in America as they move closer to a new long-term deal, according to the Telegraph’s James Ducker.

He had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer with new coach, Ernesto Valverde a keen admirer of the Spaniard, following their time together at Athletic Bilbao.

Arturo Canales, Herrera’s agent, was in America during the final week of United’s 18-day tour of the country and has met with the club to discuss terms of an extension.

The 27-year-old has 12 months left to run on the deal he signed in June 2014, with the option of a further year, and there’s no doubt he’s in for a bumper new deal.

Herrera sees a long-term future at Old Trafford and his intent to extend his deal is shared by United after he became a vital member of Jose Mourinho‘s squad.

He had endured a difficult second season at United under Louis Van Gaal, struggling to cement his place in the first-team, however, he is now an indispensable player, playing alongside Paul Pogba, winning the League Cup and Europa League.

The Spaniard has endeared himself to fans and is a popular figure in the dressing room, which is why he has also been identified as a future captain.
