Jose Mourinho has demanded Manchester United players to improve if they’re looking to regain the Premier League this season.
Man United only managed 54 league goals last season, coming to 15 draws from 38 fixtures as they lost just five times, two of those after the Portuguese boss conceded defeat on a top four finish.
Speaking about the season, Mourinho believes the rest of the team need to step up.
“Real Madrid is out of context,” Mourinho explained. “Because it’s a league where the top teams are much better than the other teams, where the top teams easily win 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 5-1, so the 126 goals we scored is out of context.
“In my other clubs it was more people scoring goals, midfield players, wingers, central defenders in the air scoring goals from set-pieces. We always had that, we always had the guy who scores more goals, but then we had the winger who scored 15 goals, the midfielder who scored 10 goals, we had a central defender that scored five goals and last season that didn’t happen much.
“We were focused on the goals our striker was scoring and when he was not scoring the team was a little bit in trouble to win matches.”
“The challenge is to win more matches than we did,” Mourinho added. “By scoring more or conceding less goals, I don’t know. I think at home we lost only one match and in the cups never lost, but too many draws.
“It would be better to lose two or three matches but to win three or four more matches and then have six or eight more points and then our position would be a different position in the table.
“We had lots of dominance at home, we had lots of chances, we had lots when match should be two or three-nil and in the end it was 1-1. But to have a better position in the table need to win more matches than last season.”
Especially with Zlatan now gone, the rest of the team need to step up and help new arrival Romelu Lukaku score goals.
