Luke Shaw and Ashley Young set to return from injury ahead of schedule

Jose Mourinho has received a double injury boost after injured duo Luke Shaw and Ashley Young took part in a six-a-side game following Manchester United’s 4-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

Shaw picked up an ankle ligament injury during Man United’s 1-1 draw with Swansea City before Young suffered a groin injury that required surgery during a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo in the Europa League four days later.

Jose Mourinho noted that Shaw, set to be handed a ‘second chance’ this season, would return in September and Young in October.

But the pair, who were were seen taking part in a full-contact six-a-side game lasting 45 minutes at Old Trafford, appear to be ahead of schedule.

United were thrilling going forward against West Ham on Sunday and Shaw’s reintroduction at left-back promises to add even more verve to the side’s attacking set-up. His looming presence on the left hand side, contrasting with the more defensive minded pair of Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian, would open up space for the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to exploit, complimenting the power brought by Antonio Valencia on the other flank.

And Young, despite featuring on a sporadic basis last term, can not return soon enough. He has been a crucial figure of experience in the squad and can deliver a disciplined, energetic performance when called upon – exactly the kind of thing you need when challenging for the top spots in the league.
