Belgium coach Roberto Martinez claims he’s delighted with Romelu Lukaku’s exceptional start to life at Manchester United.
The 24-year-old has scored six times in seven starts for Jose Mourinho since his summer move from Everton, with two of those coming in his the opening game of the Premier League season against West Ham.
He’s been exceptional since his arrival and will be available for when Belgium take on Gibraltar in the World Cup qualifier, followed by an away match in Greece.
Speaking about his start, Martinez has been impressed with Lukaku.
“Romelu Lukaku was exceptional on his official debut for Manchester United and [Kevin] De Bruyne was very good in his first league match with Manchester City,” Martinez said. “[Vincent] Kompany was solid in a back three.
“After his operation this summer, Moussa Dembele played 90 minutes at a very high level [for Tottenham], and Eden [Hazard] is coming back for Chelsea.
“We have to base ourselves on that overall level of form while benefiting from the added competition provided by the youngsters who are pushing for a place.”
Lukaku has a brilliant future ahead at United and if he continues his brilliant form, will be able to lead the line moving forward.
It’s a big ask but the Belgian has all the right attributes to succeed at Old Trafford and will only improve with some guidance from Mourinho.
