Manchester United keen on signing Arsenal youngster Marcus McGuane – report

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United have expressed an interest in signing 18-year-old Arsenal midfielder Marcus McGuane, according to reports.

The youngster has yet to make an appearance under boss Arsene Wenger but was handed a place in the squad during the latter stages of last season.

He joined the club at the age of six and has developed a reputation as a tough-tacking midfield workhorse, attracting the attention of Juventus, Napoli and Manchester City following a strong 2016/17 campaign with the Under 23s.

And according to the Independent, United have also pin-pointed the midfielder as a prime target ahead of the 2017/18 season.

Arsenal have always produced a steady conveyor belt of youth and can claim to have propelled a number of academy products to the first team. Hector Bellerin, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Iwobi all serve as pertinent examples, and McGuane – a boyhood Arsenal fan – will want to follow in their footsteps.

But a more likely fate for McGuane is that he joins the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Jeff Reine-Adélaïde, Chuba Akpom and Reiss Nelson as an occasional feature in the first team, usually for cup games or the latter stages of dead rubber league games.

United, on the other hand, have demonstrated over the years – especially on the final day of last season – that youth runs through the club’s veins in a way that no other club can really replicate, leaving McGuane with a difficult stick or twist decision to make over his future.
