Nemanja Matic has made it clear that Manchester United will look to fight on all fronts this season after making a positive start to their Premier League campaign.
The Serbian, who arrived from Chelsea for £40m earlier this month, has been faultless at the base of midfield during wins over West Ham United, Swansea City and Leicester.
He will now join up with his national side for World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ireland before returning to Old Trafford for what promises to be a crucial month as Man United begin their Champions League campaign against Basel.
And Matic, in an interview with the Daily Mail, insisted that Mourinho’s men will expect to win every game this season.
“At the age of 29 I am an experienced player and at that stage of my career I shouldn’t need too much time to adapt,” he said.
“I knew many of United’s players from before as I’ve played against them quite a few times so I had a pretty good idea what I was walking into.
“The team helped me adapt quickly, they treated me like one of their own in the dressing-room from the very first day. We’ve made a pretty good start in the Premier League but it’s a long season and we will see how it goes.
“Winning the Premier League title will be a tough task not just for us but for everyone because there are five or six realistic contenders.
“But we all know that Manchester United are expected to win every game. As far as the Champions League is concerned, we’ve had a favourable draw and we are hopeful of still being in the competition in the latter stages.”
We may only be four games in, but you can see why Matic, in just three years, has won two Premier League titles.
There is something intangibly emboldening about his presence. United’s entire structure going forward appears more sophisticated with the 29-year-old at the base of midfield. They are controlling games in ways they simply couldn’t last season, and that largely comes down to Matic’s fluid yet intractable style.
But he is more than a midfield stalwart: he is a technician, a reader of the game, an attack-minded individual and, crucially, a winner right down to his core.
