Gary Neville heaps praise on Jose Mourinho’s transfer policy at Manchester United

Gary Neville has praised Jose Mourinho‘s transfer policy at Manchester United, noting that the Portuguese has reinforced in key areas with the right players.

Mourinho landed the services of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba during his first summer as Man United boss.

And he has added Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic to the ranks over the last nine months; five of those are now established first team starters.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville has hailed Mourinho for choosing players that aligned with the profile needed to be a United player.

“What I would say about United is that a couple of seasons ago you could be immensely critical of their transfer policy being all over the place,” he said.

“They were signing players that shouldn’t have been at the club and didn’t fit the profile of a Manchester United player.

“What I’ve seen in this last 12 months are the players they have signed in my mind, Pogba, Bailly, Matic and Lukaku fit the profile of a United player – the strength, the personality, the character.

“I’m a lot happier from a United point of view as a fan that the club seems to be back on track and Jose’s had a big part to play in that because he does do well in the transfer market. He did well at Chelsea as well.

“Even the shifting out of Depay and Schneiderlin last January for £45m was business that United haven’t done in the past.”

Louis van Gaal seemed to cast a wide and ambiguous net during his time at Old Trafford. The likes of Memphis Depay, Angel di Maria, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Radamel Falcao, Luke Shaw and Morgan Schneiderlin were all ostensibly good signings, but there never really seemed to a clear plan for them. What was their role? What purpose were they meant to serve? If you were to ask me to sum up the Van Gaal era with one expression, I wouldn’t hesitate in choosing the question mark.

With Mourinho, however, the purpose behind every signing was clear. Lukaku’s job is obvious; Matic’s role is clear for all to see. These are two areas that needed supplementing and he handpicked the perfect players to carry out what he wanted – a stark contrast to the three years that came before.
