Kyle Walker confirms Eric Dier wanted to join Manchester United this summer

Kyle Walker has confirmed that Eric Dier wanted to join Manchester United over the summer during a strange Instagram live video filmed by Dele Alli.

Jose Mourinho had pin-pointed Dier as his preferred midfield option ahead of the transfer window and the Englishman was reportedly keen on completing a move to Old Trafford.

Tottenham Hotspur initially set an asking price of £50m but later rejected a £60m bid from United, clearly determined to avoid selling any key players, and Nemanja Matic joined the ranks instead.

And Walker, after being jokingly (I think) called a traitor by Dier for joining Manchester City during an Instagram live stream, quipped back by noting that the latter wanted a move to United.

How Dier would have featured in this current Mourinho system is hard to discern. He is not, in any sense, a calm presence on the ball and somebody who breaks through the lines like Matic, but more of thuggish, typically English type of midfielder.

Either way, any move for Dier would have always ended up falling through. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, as Sir Alex Ferguson has past noted, is a horrible customer at the negotiating table and would have never considered selling an important player to a rival so soon after Walker’s departure.
