Wayne Rooney has noted that Romelu Lukaku has already shown exactly why he is the perfect striker for Manchester United this season.
The Belgian arrived from Everton for a fee of £75m, with Rooney later going the other way on a free transfer, and has made a scintillating start to life at Old Trafford, claiming four goals in as many games.
And Rooney, who has claimed two goals for the Toffees this season, was quick to note that Lukaku’s style perfectly accommodates the approach being taken by Mourinho this season.
“For that United side, he is the perfect player,” he said. “He is powerful, quick and strong and he scores goals, so certainly will improve that team.”
The value of securing your first choice option up front over the transfer window cannot be underestimated. Mourinho, following last year’s inertia in front of goal, needed somebody who could all but guarantee goals in the Premier League – somebody who was wreaking havoc the season before.
And Lukaku has proven to be exactly that. His presence at the masthead of attack invokes a sense of boldness and brutality that simply wasn’t there before. He is, above anything, a proper striker. Nothing gives him more joy that putting the ball in the back of the net. This is his drug. And supporters will be desperate to see it continue.
