Nemanja Matic has downplayed the suggestion he was this summer’s best signing and instead pointed towards the long season ahead.
To say that Matic’s arrival at Manchester United has been instrumental in our early season form is an understatement. The Chelsea midfielder’s arrival transformed the shape and balance of our midfield so much, to the point where we look a completely different team in that area of the pitch.
But Matic is concentrating on the busy September period coming up for Man United rather than getting distracted with any labels of being the summer’s best buy.
“It is too early to say that because we have just played three games. It is true that we have started well with three games, nine points without conceding a goal, so I am happy because of that.
But the season is very long and there are many games. We will see at the end of May where we are.
“What I can say is that I am happy that I am part of such a big club like Manchester United. I am very focused to do my job for the national team against Ireland.”
I can’t figure out whether Matic being so good in a United shirt is down to the fact he really is that good or if it’s more to do with the fact we haven’t had anyone play in that role to that standard for so long that there’s a hint of hyperbole attached to his performances.
Either way, he’s bossing the midfield at the moment and allowing Paul Pogba to run riot in the final third of the pitch. His arrival not only sured up our defence but freed Pogba and for those two reason it is easy to see why the early labels suggest he is the summer’s best signing.
Thanks very much for Matic, Chelsea football club.
