Manchester United will rival Arsenal in their bid to sign AS Monaco’s Thomas Lemar next summer, according to reports.
Reports suggested over the transfer window that Lemar, subject to interest from Arsene Wenger, would have preferred a move to Old Trafford or Anfield.
Jose Mourinho never launched a bid for the Frenchman in the end but Arsenal, with Manchester City bidding £55m for Alexis Sanchez on deadline day, tabled a late £92m bid that was accepted, only to pull out of the deal.
And according to the Mirror‘s John Richardson, the 21-year-old has been pin-pointed as a potential option out wide by Mourinho for next summer.
The 54-year-old will quietly rue his board’s inability to secure a winger, or at least an inverted attacking wide player, over the summer, and he has clearly taken note of Arsenal’s dalliance with Monaco over Lemar during the final hours of the transfer window.
Monaco are open to selling Lemar – who dazzled for France against the Netherlands – at a certain price, and adding a player blossoming with creative zeal and a capacity to penetrate defences nods towards the direction United are moving in under Mourinho.
Perhaps Agent Paul will need to work his magic once again.
