Thierry Henry explains why Marouane Fellaini is important to Manchester United

Former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry has explained why Marouane Fellaini serves as such an important player at Manchester United, pointing towards the midfielder’s indefatigable work rate.

The Belgian has made a superb start to the 2017/18 campaign, claiming goals against Leicester City and FC Basel from the bench before being handed a place in the starting XI for the 4-0 win over Everton.

Jose Mourinho has publicly made note of the importance of Fellaini to his plans and reports suggest he could be offered a new contract at the end of this season.

And Henry, who has worked closely with the 29-year-old as second assistant manager of the Belgian national side, told Sky Sports that Fellaini always gives everything.

“What you have with Marouane Fellaini is that he will give you his best every single time,” he said.

“He’s an honest player. He’s not going to be Paul Scholes, we know that. [But] he gives 100 per cent and he does ever so well.”

It went largely unnoticed that Fellaini, once again, was imperious in the middle against Everton. He does not – and never will – offer the same fluidity and craft as Paul Pogba, but there is a sense of grittiness and physical presence to his game that puts opponents on the back foot.

But the main thing underlining why Mourinho values Fellaini so highly is that he always gives everything. Never in four years has he kicked up a fuss or caused any rifts. From day one he has applied himself like a true professional, and that in itself deserves enormous praise.
