Ashley Young impresses Manchester United fans with assist from defence vs Southampton

Manchester United fans were impressed by Ashley Young‘s performance at left-back against Southampton on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 win for the Reds.

The Englishman assisted Romelu Lukaku’s 20th-minute opener with a wonderful right-footed cross after he’d cut back on the left flank.

Young returned from a long-term injury this month and had already put in a good showing in defence, first at right-back against FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League and then against Everton at left-back.

United fans quickly highlighted his attacking superiority over the Reds’ other left-back options.

Young, now 32, is proving a remarkably reliable option at left-back. As a utility player, he’s often been useful despite obvious weaknesses in his game.

Since returning from injury, though, he’s begun to make himself the first choice left-back, ahead of the young Luke Shaw.

The English pairing both returned to the under-23s in the same game back in August, but Young has been fast-tracked back into side far quicker than his younger teammate and is now keeping him out of the side.
