Manchester United fans were impressed by Ashley Young‘s performance at left-back against Southampton on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 win for the Reds.
The Englishman assisted Romelu Lukaku’s 20th-minute opener with a wonderful right-footed cross after he’d cut back on the left flank.
Young returned from a long-term injury this month and had already put in a good showing in defence, first at right-back against FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League and then against Everton at left-back.
United fans quickly highlighted his attacking superiority over the Reds’ other left-back options.

Ashley Young is honestly United’s best LB option right now.

Ashley Young doing what Mourinho wanted Blind to do. Give beautiful crosses.

Another superb delivery from Ashley Young. And yet people still slate him.

That’s advantage of having Ashley Young at LB. Can go outside or inside with better quality than Utd’s other LB’s. Good option v deep blocks

Young, now 32, is proving a remarkably reliable option at left-back. As a utility player, he’s often been useful despite obvious weaknesses in his game.
Since returning from injury, though, he’s begun to make himself the first choice left-back, ahead of the young Luke Shaw.
The English pairing both returned to the under-23s in the same game back in August, but Young has been fast-tracked back into side far quicker than his younger teammate and is now keeping him out of the side.
