Manchester United’s first half performance against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night was the Reds’ best of the season, centre-back Chris Smalling has claimed.
The Englishman put in a fantastic display himself, playing at the back in a free-flowing and dynamic team who tore CSKA Moscow apart away from home.
The Reds started in good fashion with a fourth-minute Romelu Lukaku opener and continued their rampant scoring form with another two before half-time.
“That was our best first half of the season,” Smalling said.We are showing that we can adapt, change formation and play in different ways.
“We are showing that we can adapt, change formation and play in different ways.”
United boss Jose Mourinho elected to go with a 3-5-2 formation against CSKA, matching their Russian hosts.
Smalling is correct in asserting that the Reds coped with the tactical change well. United’s superiority never looked in doubt, despite CSKA’s obvious ability as a team, the Moscow side having beaten Benfica in the previous gameweek.
United now have two wins in two Champions League group games and are sitting pretty top of Group A. Seven goals in two games, with only one conceded, is a fantastic record for any side and after an absence of almost two years from Europe’s elite club competition, it’s good to be back, and back in style.
