Manchester United are back to competing for with the biggest clubs in the world for the biggest trophies, according to Roy Keane.
The usually cynical Man United legend was in a positive mood discussing the Reds after their 4-1 thumping of Russian side CSKA Moscow away from home in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
Keane has been vehemently critical of United in the past three seasons since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, but after Jose Mourinho‘s side has had United’s best start to the season in some years, the Irishman is pleased.
“Oh, United are back. United now look like they can compete to win the big trophies,” Keane said on ITV‘s highlights show.
“Whereas over the last year or two, you’re looking at them and thinking, ‘They’ll win a League Cup’ or the so-called lesser trophies.
“They’re back now competing and you’d expect United now to be at the latter stages of the Champions League and certainly winning the Premiership.”
United’s superb start to the campaign has been wonderful to watch, and for the first time in some years, United are expected to win the league, to challenge for the Champions League. It’s pressure, certainly, but it’s only what you can want as fans, and the same is likely for the players. It’s better to have pressure to succeed than no one to care at all.
United have that now, and it’s down to being a dynamic high-scoring side with a solid defence. Keane’s approval means nothing in the big picture, but is a representation of how far this side has come even since last season.
