Victor Lindelof has expressed his gratitude to the supporters who travelled in their numbers to see Manchester United claim an emphatic 4-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, hailing what was a “great team performance”.
The Swede has only featured sporadically during the nascent stages of his Man United career, with Jose Mourinho declaring that his new signing will need time to evolve before featuring in the Premier League.
But he was handed a chance to impress in Moscow and duly didn’t disappoint, producing a composed display on the left hand side of a back three.
Lindelof took to social media after the game to express his delight at what was an important step in his progression as a United player.
Mourinho may not have deemed Lindelof to be ready enough for the Premier League just yet, but his performances in Europe suggest things are moving in the right direction for the 23-year-old.
His main issue this season has been positioning, often finding himself affording opponents too much space in front of him or ending up on the wrong side of onrushing attackers (Casemiro’s goal in the UEFA Super Cup serves as a potent example), but with Chris Smalling adding definition to United’s defensive shape at the base of a back three, Lindelof looked comfortable throughout, cutting out passes and dominating in the air whilst exhibiting his usual class on the ball.
Supporters will just hope to see Mourinho’s first signing of the summer continue to receive chances to impress over the next few weeks.
