Roberto Martinez explains how Romelu Lukaku has improved since joining Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has hailed Romelu Lukaku for the way his game has matured since joining Manchester United over the summer.

The 24-year-old, despite being strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, opted for a move to Old Trafford in July, signing for a fee of £75m.

And he has made a truly blistering start under Jose Mourinho, netting 11 goals in his opening ten games and, in turn, rising to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts.

Speaking ahead of Belgium’s World Cup qualifier with Bosnia and Herzegovina, a game Lukaku will miss through injury, Martinez was quick to praise the striker for acclimatising to life at the top so seamlessly.

“I have seen a difference in the maturity of Romelu since his move to Manchester United,” he said.

“He is still a very young player but he has coped easily with the expectations and whatever Man United put on him. I can see he is really enjoying being in a team where there is very little margin for error.

“He is one of those players that sets himself little targets and you can see he’s on track. For us, it’s important that we see that continue over a ten-month competition.”

There are some players who look immediately at home in a red shirt and Lukaku is one of them.

His time at Everton, whilst hugely successful, was always a marriage of convenience above anything – a precursor, if you will, to the real show further down the line.

And one thing that has become abundantly clear since Lukaku made that step-up is the way he thrives under pressure more than most. As a striker the Belgian bears the unique burden of being responsible for that decisive final touch, to make attacking moves count, and you can tell he is absolutely relishing it.
