Rashford started for England against both Slovenia and Lithuania while on international duty, despite other options being available in the squad and England having already qualified after the win over Slovenia.
The two games in quick succession follow Rashford playing very regularly for Man United. Jose Mourinho has seen his 19-year-old play 15 games for club and country this season already.
With Anthony Martial waiting in the wings for a start, United’s coaching staff may rest Rashford due to the excessive number of games played recently, and could do so as soon as Saturday’s crucial clash against Liverpool.
Rashford has been first-choice on the left flank so far this season, with Martial coming in for intermittent starts and being in the form of his life.
Due to his age, Mourinho and United’s other coaches are concerned about playing Rashford too much and causing muscle injuries.
Martial is a more than adequate replacement for Rashford, having scored three and assisted two in six Premier League games, starting just one of those.
Mourinho would be sensible to ensure Rashford continues his injury-free career given the issues suffered by young English strikers in the past due to burn-out.
It’s a far easier decision to make with the presence of the fantastic Martial, too. The Frenchman deserves more starts in the first team and resting Rashford would provide an opportunity to reward Martial’s form.
