Jose Mourinho admits Manchester United’s midfield struggled against Liverpool

Jose Mourinho has conceded that Manchester United’s midfield was nowhere near dynamic enough to trouble Liverpool during the 0-0 draw at Anfield.

The Portuguese received a massive blow over the international break when Marouane Fellaini joined Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick on the treatment table with a knee ligament sprain.

And Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic, in turn, had little leverage whatsoever in the middle as Liverpool pressed high and packed the centre of the pitch.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted that Man United struggled to match the power and intensity of Liverpool’s midfield.

The trip to Anfield was dubbed as United’s first big test. A chance to show what they were really made of against the best when it truly mattered.

But this was far from an accurate reflection of what this side, especially in midfield, can offer. The presence of Paul Pogba would have been invaluable: nobody was able to generate that desire and impetus to move the ball forward so habitually promised by the Frenchman, while Marouane Fellaini‘s height at set pieces could have made an important difference.

Mourinho will just hope he has a greater wealth of options to call upon for the clash with Tottenham Hotspur at home later this month.
