Benfica 0-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 6 – Hardly had anything of note to deal with aside from watching a few pot shots sail over his bar.

Antonio Valencia 6.5 – Had to deal with a few dangerous Alex Grimaldo runs early on but, aside from that, never looked troubled defensively. Delivery was substandard.

Victor Lindelof 7.5 – The Swede is knocking on the door of Jose Mourinho‘s Premier League plans. Against his former club, he looked comfortable on the ball throughout and positioned himself well.

Chris Smalling 7 – Professionally dealt with a few dangerous balls into the box early on and rarely looked hassled. Jose Mourinho will need him to stay fit with Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo all injured.

Daley Blind 6 – Endured a poor first half, unable to add much going forward and unusually sloppy on the ball. Looked far more settled in the second period.

Ander Herrera 5.5 – The Spaniard will always give you a tenacious performance, but his lack of poise on the ball is becoming a worry. Couldn’t get anything moving going forward.

Nemanja Matic 8 – The best player on the pitch by some distance: elegant in possession, impossible to barge to one side, and always with an awareness of what was around him.

Juan Mata 6 – Nimble on the ball as always but struggled to have much of an influence on the right hand side against the impressive Grimaldo.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 5 – Another no-show from the Armenian. Picked up the ball in promising areas and looked good on the turn, but couldn’t make much happen at all.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Couldn’t assert himself in the first half whatsoever but quickly took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break, harassing Douglas with a series of penetrating runs and broke the deadlock with a fizzing free-kick that young debutant Mile Svilar couldn’t deal with.

Romelu Lukaku 5.5 – Another underwhelming outing for the Belgian, who never looked to be in the game. Didn’t receive any chances of note and couldn’t offer much control on the ball.
