Peter Schmeichel insists Jose Mourinho can park the bus after Manchester United’s previous barnstorming displays

Peter Schmeichel has lended his support to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s after the Portuguese came in for some criticism due to his tactics in the Reds’ 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

Speaking in the same way as many Man United fans, Schmeichel said he didn’t mind a selection of games a season being less than entertaining, particularly after United’s fantastic goalscoring start to the season in other fixtures.

Mourinho’s men won 4-0 twice on the bounce in the opening two games of the season in the Premier League, and did so twice more before facing Liverpool last Saturday. United have also scored four in the EFL Cup, against Burton Albion, and also in the UEFA Champions League, against CSKA Moscow.

“I’m not making excuses [for United’s last two displays], but I understand and as a fan I accept it for that one game,” Schmeichel said to talkSPORT.

“You’ve just come back from the international break and it’s Liverpool away – the one game you don’t want to lose all season – it’s a 12:30 kick off and then you’ve got Benfica midweek, so you’ve got more travelling to do.

“You want to win the game, or at least try not to lose the game and unfortunately that is the way football is going – when you get to these important games, you don’t want to lose.”

Schmeichel also pointed out the United have come on significantly since Mourinho arrived at the club in 2016, and even since the end of last season where United lifted the UEFA Europa League.

“But I have to say in the same token that I’m very, very pleased with Jose Mourinho’s personal development, I think he’s been brilliant.

“He always said, ‘I will get it right with Manchester United and I will make the fans happy’, but between the lines he has always said, ‘but I don’t have the players’.

“So when he got the players we have played some really entertaining and effective stuff and have scored a lot of goals.

“I’ve seen a big difference from last season and I’m OK with everything that’s happening there.”

It’s the same mentality that many United fans have from the great Danish goalkeeper, that some poor performances on defensive performances can be accepted if attacking qualities and entertaining football is shown on other occasions.

Most Reds would very quickly take 4-0 victories against smaller oppositions and then mixed results of draws and wins against the big teams.
