Jose Mourinho: Manchester United deserved to lose to Huddersfield Town

by Leo Nieboer

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Huddersfield Town completely deserved to claim a first ever win over Manchester United on Saturday.

A lack of control from Juan Mata followed by tame defending from Victor Lindelof allowed the hosts to score an opener through Aaron Mooy, before the Swede produced a moment of madness – completely missing a defensive header – to give Laurent Depoitre an easy chance.

Mourinho threw on Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at half time but, despite the former pulling one back, the visitors never looked like muscling their way back into the game.

Speaking after the game, the 54-year-old was quick to acknowledge that the best team won in Yorkshire.

You can point at Lindelof’s horror show, alongside the absence of key players, for this defeat. They are important factors, after all.

But the bottom line is that United, perhaps slightly fatigued from their Wednesday clash in Lisbon, never looked really up for this. Huddersfield, on the other hand, put absolutely everything on the line.

Mourinho’s men seemed two dimensional at times, dominant in possession yet largely predictable, and it set the stage for a typical heroic defensive performance from a minnow side against a top team: backs against the wall, the home crowd on top of you, rain blowing sideways.

This kind of dynamic served as an important test for United and they failed it miserably.
