Gary Neville: I was shocked by Jose Mourinho’s reaction to Manchester United’s defeat

Gary Neville has expressed his shock at manager Jose Mourinho’s post-match comments of the Manchester United’s 2–1 defeat to Huddersfield Town.

The Portuguese boss came out after Saturday afternoon’s poor performance and slam the attitude of his players, while refusing to single out individual players for defensive errors.

Mourinho claimed it was one of the worst attitudes he had seen from any side he has managed.

Neville, speaking to Sky Sports, admitted that he “thought it would be tough for United because of the atmosphere there, but I felt they would come through it.”

“I didn’t see the game live but I was stunned by the result and also by Jose Mourinho’s comment after about the application of the players, saying it was the worse he’s seen.

“I’m really surprised – it’s a bad loss for United. Next Saturday becomes a huge game for Manchester United to get back on the bike.”

Mourinho has a track record of using the media to motivated players, creating a siege mentality of ‘us against the world’. Sometimes it works magic, winning league titles and Champions Leagues and trebles, but other times, the team falls apart, crumbling under pressure.

Hopefully, the 54-year-old can lead United to great success using this, but some see the signs of there of Mourinho doing what he’s done previous clubs, criticising the players, alienating them and potentially losing the dressing room. It would be ridiculous to suggest that that has happened that the stage, but in the long-term, United fans will hope it never does.

In the short term, things have to improve very quickly for United, with games against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea coming up.
