Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has slammed Jose Mourinho for putting his player Eric Dier in a “compromising position”.
Manchester United approached Dier in 2016 and continued their pursuit throughout the season, Pochettino revealed.
Mourinho, it has been revealed, spoke to Dier after Man United beat Tottenham at Old Trafford in December 2016.
Writing in the Daily Mail, Pochettino revealed his anger at that conversation occurring.
“I found out that United have made an approach and the player is being destabilised,” he said.
“His people have been putting pressure on him, although United are not promising anything.
“Mourinho and I had finished our interviews at Old Trafford and the players were doing their warm-down on the pitch. When Jose was done with the press, he stood by the entrance to the tunnel and regarded the returning players.
“He greeted Moussa Sissoko and hugged Dier. They passed by me en route to the dressing rooms, laughing, speaking in Portuguese. Maybe it is a common Mourinho tactic, but he put Eric in a compromising position. You cannot do that after a defeat.”
United interest in Dier was well known for the past two summers, and they reportedly approached Tottenham again this summer looking to sign the English international, but were rebuffed and signed Chelsea’s Serbian holding midfielder Nemanja Matic instead.
When United will go back for Dier in the coming months is yet to be seen, but Dier is back in form now after his performances suffered due to the continuing interest from Jose Mourinho. The Reds are reportedly looking at £30m deal for Valencia’s young Spanish midfielder Carlos Soler.
