Jesse Lingard gives his thoughts following Swansea City 0-2 Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Jesse Lingard has expressed his delight at claiming a brace during Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Swansea City in the League Cup on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old, who had scored in his last two League Cup appearances, provided a cool finish after latching onto Marcus Rashford‘s flick with 21 minutes gone.

And he added his third of the season in the second half with a truly sensational header on the edge of the box from Matteo Darmian‘s cross.

Speaking after the game, Lingard noted that Jose Mourinho‘s men had worked extremely hard on rectifying some of the shortcomings seen against Huddersfield Town last weekend.

“I thought we were in control, since the weekend we worked hard on the training pitch,” he said.

“We’ll learn from it now and concentrate on tonight’s game. First header in a long time. Not like that before. I’m striving for more goals this season, it didn’t come in this game, it might come in the next.

“Depends how the ball lands, depends which game you’re in, it fell for me nice today.

“I don’t think they have, it’s always good to win trophies, especially early in the season.”

At a time when Henrikh Mkhitaryan looks bereft of fresh ideas at No.10, perhaps this display from Lingard has provided Mourinho with an important alternative going forward.

The Englishman certainly possesses the natural attributes needed to thrive in that role: he is agile, quick, possesses a low centre of gravity and a good amount of positional intelligence, along with an air of confidence on the ball following two campaigns with the first team.

But will only receive the chance to hone these skills in the limelight if he can show the same potency going forward as he did at the Liberty Stadium.
