Jose Mourinho: Manchester United deserved to beat Tottenham Hotspur

by Leo Nieboer

Jose Mourinho has insisted following Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur that the home side deserved to win.

The hosts enjoyed a strong opening ten minutes, only for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to gain a strong foothold as the first half went on.

But United came out of the blocks faster once again after half time and pressed the visitors with intent before Anthony Martial, on from the bench, scored a decisive winner with ten minutes left.

And Mourinho, speaking after the game, made it clear that the win was richly deserved.

This was a performance straight out of the Mourinho textbook. Man United were defensively resolute, compact, physically aggressive, and waiting for their moment to pounce.

Mourinho, with Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini still out, knew that he couldn’t win this game by dominating the midfield battle, especially with Spurs packing the centre with Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen and Harry Winks, so he made the entire affair a war of attrition. A battle to see who cracks first.

And Spurs, having defended resolutely all game, made the first vital slip as Jan Vertonghen failed to track Martial, who calmly powered home a strike past his countryman that could prove to be crucial going forward.
