Jose Mourinho disappointed with Old Trafford fans for Romelu Lukaku reaction

Manchester United hosted Tottenham at Old Trafford with Romelu Lukaku starting the match and helping provide a vital assist for Anthony Martial‘s winner.

However, parts of the stadium’s crowd were heard groaning whenever the Belgian lost a ball or took a touch that was a little on the heavy side.

Manager Jose Mourinho was disappointed with the reactions from his club’s fans and hoped for more appreciation for Lukaku’s hard work.

The powerful forward moved to the Red Devils over the summer, starting his career well in his new surroundings but his form has tapered off lately.

Romelu is known for being capable of holding the ball up well for his teammates but Everton fans notoriously called out his inability to have a lighter touch, often sparking opposition counters after losing possession.

According to Sky Sports, Mourinho said to MUTV after the match: “I would like the supporters to explain to me why they don’t support him so much because he gives everything and I think it is not fair when scoring the goal or not scoring the goal [he] makes the whole difference.

“I don’t think it is fair at all. So, I’m a bit disappointed – but not with him. With him [I am] very pleased.”

The former Everton man’s flicked header through to Martial was well timed and well taken as helped his side unlock a stubborn Tottenham defence.

Lukaku has been isolated in recent matches for his team, prompting Jose to partner him with Marcus Rashford in a bid to get him more involved in play.

Despite the tactical tweak, there wasn’t huge improvements as it became clear the Portuguese’s problems are mainly in midfield which should hopefully be solved with the return of Paul Pogba.

The star Frenchman should provide better for his teammate and bring more attacking impetus from the engine room, something United have lacked of late.

Romelu’s touch is something that he has reportedly been working on of late but so long as he keeps scoring, no one should really care how they go in.
