Dimitar Berbatov: Winning more important than stye for Manchester United

by Harry Robinson

Former-Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes it is far more important for the Reds to return to winning ways than play beautiful football.

Jose Mourinho’s Man United have been criticised for not consistently playing free-flowing, attacking football, though they are one of the Premier League’s top goalscorers.

Yet most United fans have accepted a defensive performance here and there with Mourinho guiding the Reds to two trophies last season (the EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League) and seeing United sitting in second in the Premier League and top of Group A in the UEFA Champions League.

“At the moment it’s all about winning,” Berbatov said on BT Sport. “I prefer to see them win [than play beautiful football].”

The Bulgarian was speaking after United comfortably saw off Benfica at Old Trafford with a 2-0 victory, thanks to an own goal from young goalkeeper Svilar forced by a wonderful Nemanja Matic strike, and a Daley Blind penalty.

United have four wins from four in the Champions League and qualification is a matter of when, not if.

Results are steady, and far improved on Mourinho’s predecessors. Berbatov is right, and he was backed up by Paul Scholes who made similar comments on Tuesday night.
