Manchester United beat Benfica 2-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a penalty and an own goal but one of the game’s talking points was Scott McTominay‘s first start in the Champions League.
The Scotsman is clearly rated by Jose Mourinho who continues to slowly integrate him into the team and is handing him more minutes the more matches United are involved in.
McTominay previously featured for the Red Devils in the Champions League but this was his first start and he played well in the 90 minutes he was on the field for.
Partnered alongside Nemnaja Matic, his job was easy enough but the youngster impressed with his simplicity and composure.
Fans at Old Trafford love nothing more than seeing one of their academy products succeed at the club and the youngster’s appearance pleased many supporters.
McTominay is literally Darren Fletcher reincarnated. Great at mopping up, just enough technique, loads of energy, confusing overall attribute

McTominay’s been really good tonight. Good interceptions / tackles – plays like a young Darren Fletcher.

Initially brought into the squad along with Andreas Pereira, many predicted that Scott would hardly get any game time this season but the Belgian born midfielder’s move to Valencia opened up the door for McTominay.
Most fans believed that Pereira was a superior player and more ready for first team action but the youngster forced through a move to the Spanish side, believing he’d receive little to no match experience with Jose Mourinho‘s team.
Should McTominay continue to put in simple but effective performances as he did today, then surely more minutes will be coming his way in the future.
