Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has refused to accept that Jose Mourinho will be looking for revenge on his former club when brings Manchester United to London on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds were hammered 4-0 in Mourinho’s first game at Stamford Bridge, where he was manager on two separate occasions with great success, with United. Last season also saw United suffer 1 -0 defeat in the FA Cup after an unlucky sending off for Ander Herrera.
Mourinho was at his glummest after those two results, but isn’t looking for revenge, Conte believes, on Sunday.
“Don’t forget that they won 2-0 in the second game at home,” Conte said. “Every coach, every player, every team wants to win. Not for revenge, but because you need to win.”
Mourinho himself has said he sees a return to Stamford Bridge as no different to a trip to another big club, like Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. It’s a big game, of course, but he insists he sees it no differently to games against other top six sides.
However, there will always be an extra element after Mourinho was unceremoniously sacked in December 2015 having won the league title just months before.
Summer signing Nemanja Matic will also be back at his old club, the first time since he joined United for over £35m. He’s been missed by his former-club and hailed by fans of his new club as arguably the player of the season so far for Mourinho’s men. Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku will both also be back at their old clubs.
