Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has slammed Henrikh Mkhitaryan following another anonymous display from the Armenian during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Mkhitaryan has monumentally struggled for form ever since claiming five assists in his first three games in a Man United shirt.
And he was once again a spectator at No.10, unable to find teammates up the pitch or any meaningful space on the pitch in general.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Carragher noted that Mkhitaryan was so ineffective that it was like United were playing with ten men.
The crucial difference that underlined Chelsea’s win was that the hosts created an avenue between midfield and attack, giving the likes of Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata time on the ball, whereas the gap between midfield and attack for United was like a chasm for the most part.
Mkhitaryan’s ability to do exactly this early on in the campaign gave United life going forward, but the last few weeks have witnessed a miserable downturn in form for the 28-year-old.
He never seemed to escape N’Golo Kante and Timeoue Bakayoko, blending into the surroundings rather than standing out and making things happen, and his confidence diminished as the game went on.
Too immobile, too weak, too one dimensional – and it ultimately meant United were a blunt instrument going forward. Something has to change.
