Anthony Martial delighted with call-up to French national side

Anthony Martial has expressed his delight at receiving a call-up to the French national side by Didier Deschamps for friendlies with Wales and Germany.

The winger’s hasn’t featured for Les Bleus since featuring in a 0-1 win over Holland in October 2016, with Didier Deschamps publicly imploring the youngster to improve before being selected again throughout the 2016/17 campaign.

And Martial has done exactly that this season with a series of blistering displays on the left hand side, netting six goals and claiming five assists in all competitions.

Speaking soon after being reintroduced to the national set-up, Martial noted that he felt the call-up was deserved.

“I learnt about it [call-up] through my dad, because I was getting some physio treatment,” he said.

“I was happy, but I also feel it’s deserved. I’ve given a lot during this start to the season and I’m really happy and we’ll see how it goes.”

The World Cup serves as the holy grail for any professional and Martial, from day one, has borne the look of a man with white hot determination coursing through his veins. He was not going to be ignored by Deschamps for any longer.

And he was not, by extension, going to let the watching world forget about the brilliance he displayed during his first season at the club. Some flames begin bright but quickly fizzle out, and it was feared by many that this was the form Martial’s career was going to take.

But the 21-year-old, in just a couple of months, has reminded everybody that the best is yet to come.
