Jose Mourinho hasn’t been afforded same privileges as Guardiola, claims Marcel Desailly

Jose Mourinho must be given time to build Manchester United in his image according to former-Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly.

The Portuguese has come under some criticism with his Man United team sitting eight points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, though they are in second.

The Reds are currently topping their UEFA Champions League Group A after four wins in four games. But there is little doubt that Man City are the superior team at this stage, with Mourinho having arrived at Old Trafford at the same time as Pep Guardiola at City.

Desailly says Mourinho has been afforded less patience than Guardiola.

“He has to stay as Mourinho. He knows the capacity of his team,” Desailly explained to Omnisport.

“He looks like he’s not really had the team he wanted, like when you compare with [Pep] Guardiola, who really chose every player he wanted in and out. Mourinho, he’s still dealing with some players that he didn’t really want in his system.

“He’s doing well, so I hope United will shine like they were shining at the time with [Alex] Ferguson.

“But it’s tough. Every time, every game, there’s big history on the shoulders of all the players and on the manager. So, let’s give him time.”

While Guardiola arrived at City with Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva among others in the squad and at their peaks, Mourinho inherited a United side with potential, but not with a solid base of world-class quality.

Yet Mourinho has had two summers and two January transfer windows to change the make-up of his side, with huge amounts of money available.

United remain in transition, some have suggested, even though it’s been four years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Mourinho’s side have improved hugely on last season, and hopefully the same progress can be made within the season.
