Manchester United to trigger contract extensions for four players including Ander Herrera and Juan Mata

Manchester United are set to trigger contract extensions in the deals of four players in the coming months, to tie the quartet down until the end of next season.

Spanish pairing Ander Herrera and Juan Mata, as well as Daley Blind and Ashley Young, will all reportedly see their deals extended until the summer of 2018.

The Telegraph suggest that Man United have also already triggered a clause in Luke Shaw’s deal which keeps the Englishman at Old Trafford until June 2019. However, that may simply be to command a higher price for the Englishman if the Reds choose to sell the left-back.

The club almost always include a one-year contract extension clause that they can trigger in deals for new players, and in contract extensions for all players.

It allows them, in the case of older players, to keep assets at the club for a further year without having to commit to a huge new and excessive loyalty/signing on bonus.

The situations of all four players, as well as Shaw, are different.

The Telegraph suggest that Ander Herrera and the club have been discussing a new deal, but there have been complications, despite the midfielder wanting to remain put at Old Trafford. Triggering a one-year extension gives some wiggle room and prevents any clubs from offering Herrera deal in January.

Once players have six months left on their contract and are over the age of 24, other clubs may offer them deals for a free transfer. United will avoid this happening with Herrera.

For Juan Mata, Ashley Young and Daley Blind, their futures are uncertain, but this prevents manager Jose Mourinho from having to think about or deal with these situations. Mata has been recently linked with Real Madrid.

Shaw, meanwhile, is likely receiving an extension only to push up a transfer fee. Top Premier League clubs are unsurprisingly interested in Shaw because of his obvious talent. Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester City are all watching the situation unfold.
