Manchester United interested in Brazilian midfielder Fred: report

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Shakhtar Donetsk’s Frederico Santos, more commonly and simply known as Fred.

The Brazilian midfielder has been in fine form for his club, garnering interest from Europe’s top clubs and apparently United are one of the sides looking to invest in him.

The Red Devils recently went through a midfield shortage with all of Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini all suffering injuries.

Jose Mourinho was left with only Nemanja Matic and the underperforming Ander Herrera as the two senior midfielders available.

The Portuguese manager was reportedly unhappy with Andreas Pereira‘s decision to leave on loan to Valencia for this exact reason and Mourinho may just have had enough.

According to the Mirror, Jose is looking to invest in the engine room once more and has set his sights on Shaktar Donetsk’s player.

With reports of Fellaini possibly moving to Turkey during the upcoming January transfer window, United will certainly need to bring someone in.

The lack of options in midfield has seen academy product Scott McTominay feature for the first team in recent matches.

Manchester United’s manager started the season with his team in fine form and was known to switch people two formations in order to get the best out of his squad.

A 4-2-3-1 formation and a 4-3-3 formation were often alternated even during games and Mourinho is notorious for his need of tactical flexibility.

It’s likely that even without the Red Devils’ injury crisis or Fellaini’s possible departure that Jose would’ve targeted a January reinforcement anyways.
