Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku may have his work cut out for him when Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns to full fitness according to former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol.
The Belgian striker is currently suffering a goal drought for the Red Devils, having not scored since before the last international break in October.
Lukaku started the season in fine form for his new club but has recently struggled to find the net as concerns begin to grow at Old Trafford.
United’s form has also dropped off lately which is no surprise as their star man tries to break a poor run of displays.
ESPN FC pundit Nicol though believes that Romelu may not have as much time as he’d hope to get over his little hiccup.
According to the Sunday Express, Steve said: “Listen, if he’s [Mourinho] not going to let him [Lukaku] take a penalty after spending £80million on him, and he’s not scoring goals, you think he’s going to play him over Ibrahimovic? I don’t think so.”
Zlatan’s return to fitness has been eagerly anticipated by supporters who hope the tall striker’s presence can give the club a much needed boost.
Jose Mourinho‘s men are currently eight points away from league leaders and fierce rivals Manchester City.
The Manchester clubs were going head to head for the majority of the season until it all fell apart for United vs Huddersfield.
The Premier League newcomers took advantage of an absent Paul Pogba and the Red Devils struggled to show their worth without their star Frenchman.
Pogba’s injury has been said to be the cause of both Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s poor form as the pair of players miss the former Juventus man in the middle of midfield.
With Paul set to return after the international break and Ibrahimovic close to full fitness, United will have a strong squad to compete with in the busy winter period.
