Manchester United were reportedly an option for a young Portuguese prospect according to Ruben Vinagre.

The Wolves loanee is under contract to Monaco but has been featuring for the Championship this season.

Having impressed in England, many have speculated of a move to Old Trafford and if the player’s words are to be believed, the move almost happened.

However, the full-back ultimately decided to move to the French side instead who loaned him out in the hopes of developing one of Portugal’s brightest talents.

According to Vinagre, a move to United was on the cards alongside Monaco and a host of European club’s but that he eventually decided the best move for his career was to the Ligue 1 champions.

Speaking to O Jogo, Ruben said: “Yes, it is [rumours are true]. United is a great club and a dream, like other big clubs in England and Spain.

“At the time, I was very focused on United, because it was a great opportunity… But then the other proposals were studied and I, together with my advisors, thought that the best project for my development would be Monaco.

“Yes, of course, it [playing under Mourinho] doesn’t happen today, but it can happen at another time, who knows. Now I’m focused on the club where I am.”

The Red Devils could certainly do with an improvement in the left back spot and the 18 year old could be the one to fill the position.

United have played a number of different players in that area of the field across numerous seasons with the position possibly not being properly stocked since Patrice Evra marauded that flank.

Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw have all featured there on different occasions with neither of them truly nailing down the position for themselves.

Rojo has since been preferred in the centre-back position by Jose Mourinho whilst Blind and Darmian have ultimately been uninspiring while playing there.

Shaw has his attitude and fitness issues which Mourinho may finally be fed up with and Vinagre could possibly replace him as United’s full-back for the next decade.

Young has impressed in recent matches, even winning his spot in England’s international set-up but it’s likely that Jose still has his eye on another player and who knows, that player may just be Ruben.
