Antoine Griezmann frustrating Atletico Madrid fans with Manchester United move still on the cards

by Harry Robinson

Atletico Madrid fans are growing increasingly frustrated at Manchester United-target Antoine Griezmann after his ’messages of love’ to the Reds during last summer.

Griezmann was booed off the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday evening after a string of poor performances. Some have claimed his mind is elsewhere and his attitude is far from its best.

The Frenchman claimed in summer that there was a “six out of 10”chance that he’d sign for Man United. Many Atleti fans have not forgiven him, which is a shame given that the only reason Griezmann reportedly didn’t join United is to show loytalty to Los Rojiblancos after FIFA upheld the club’s transfer ban.

That ban will be lifted in January with Chelsea’s Diego Costa joining the La Liga side. Griezmann has been the star for the last few years under Diego Simeone, but his poor form, though he has often been made the scapegoat, and flirting with United may make Atleti less reluctant to see his release clause triggered.

Though he signed a new contract at the club after turning down United, he insisted that his €100m release clause was kept in his deal. United could trigger that at any point, including in January, and Griezmann may still be interested.

He did recently say, though, that he has dreamt of playing alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain.

Spanish outlet El Confidencial [h/t Sport Witness] claim Atletico’s support no longer believe Griezmann is giving everything to the club and suggest there is a remaining distrust following his ‘messages of love’ to United.

Barcelona have also been linked to Griezmann, and with the signing of Romelu Lukaku in the summer from Everton and the improving form and increasing trust Mourinho has in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as well as the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from injury, United may no longer want to pay €100m for an out-of-form Griezmann.
