The former-Red believes Martial’s best will be seen when he’s given an ‘arm round the shoulder’.
Martial netted his fifth Premier League goal of the season on Saturday as Man United comfortably dismantled Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford. The Frenchman headed in a first half equaliser after Dwight Gayle had put the Magpies in front.
“I’m hoping he [Martial] is going to be there a long time,” Cole told ESPN FC. “If you look at the talent that kid’s got, it’s absolutely frightening. He’s got great feet, scores goals and creates goals.
“He’s had his ups and downs with the manager already but I think he just wants the arm around the shoulder — a bit of loving and you’ll definitely get the best out of him.”
Mourinho has shown Martial tough love since he took over at United in July 2016. Opportunities for Martial were limited last season, and his confidence was low due to both on and off pitch issues.
His confidence returned in the summer and he’s started the season fantastically, with five goals in 11 league games, often from the bench.
Martial has one of the best goal contribution records in the league (frequency of goals/assists), in the top four players for that particular stat alongside Sergio Aguero, Peter Crouch and Leroy Sane.
Tough love has worked, with Mourinho publicly questioning Martial previously. Now it has, is it time for some real public affection? Cole thinks so, but things are good at the moment, so no need to rock the boat with Martial’s development and make him complacent, that’s something Mourinho always tries to avoid.
