Sergio Romero 6 – Made a couple of routine stops in the second half but didn’t receive much help at all from his teammates for what was a woeful late goal to concede.
Matteo Darmian 5 – Picked up some good positions in the first half and moved the ball along well, only to lose composure as the game went on. Gave away too many sloppy fouls.
Chris Smalling 6 – Coped well with Dimitri Oberlin on the whole but looked fragile once Basel grew into the game.
Marcos Rojo 7 – Enjoyed an assured, commanding return to action after over seven months on the sidelines. Made some important interceptions and didn’t show any signs of shirking potentially dangerous challenges.
Daley Blind 5 – Manipulated the ball nicely in the first half but found himself constantly overwhelmed by Basel’s right hand side, with Renato Steffen bursting past him with ease on several occasions. Completely asleep for Michael Lang’s goal.
Ander Herrera 6 – Another dogged, energetic display from the Spaniard, but one that often lacked positional sense whenever Basel recovered possession. Lacked a yard of pace.
Marouane Fellaini 7 – Posed a powerful threat in the first half with his sheer stature and prowess. Could have easily claimed a couple of goals and looked crisp on the ball.
Paul Pogba 7 – Dominated the first half with admirable ease, dictating the tempo and releasing players all over the pitch, but notably flagged after the break.
Jesse Lingard 5 – A blunt instrument on the right hand side: offered scant composure on the ball and never looked like making any inroads.
Anthony Martial 7 – With some better finishing from his teammates, Martial could have taken his assist tally to seven through two sublime crosses. Constantly hassled Basel’s right hand side and, at times, needed better support around him.
Romeu Lukaku 6 – Enjoyed a strong start to the game, producing a series of clever flick ons and turns to keep United on the front foot, but once again anonymous in the box. Fluffed a good early chance.
