Nemanja Matic is far more influential than Paul Pogba for Manchester United, claims Johnny Giles.
Pogba is not the complete midfielder, according to the ex-Man United man, who was more successful at Leeds United after leaving Old Trafford.
The Frenchman recently returned from injury for United, scoring and assisting against Newcastle United in a 4-1 victory before starting in a second and third consecutive game, against FC Basel and then Brighton & Hove Albion.
“I never thought Pogba was a complete midfield player,” Giles said. “Of course he is useful. But I don’t see him as the influence as lot a people do.
“Matic is far more influential. He won’t look as spectacular but for getting the job done in a professional manner, he is far more influential.”
It’s an interesting take on United’s midfield. Matic has been United’s player of the season so far, the most consistent performer in the side.
But Pogba is a different level. Injury has prevented him from being United’s main man, but his influence on the side is clear.
The Reds have, on average, almost double the number of shots, double the number of chances created, big chances created when Pogba is in the United side. They have scored almost double the number of goals and Romelu Lukaku has almost double the number of touches in the opposition box when Pogba is playing.
Giles is correct to point out Matic’s importance, but Pogba is more influential and a player of higher quality. He is, alongside David de Gea, the world-class player in United’s side.
