Manchester United fear that Borussia Dortmund are targeting a move for 17-year-old talent Angel Gomes.
The Englishman became Man United’s youngest player since Duncan Edwards at the end of last season, replacing Wayne Rooney as a substitute in the Reds’ 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.
He has the potential to be one of the best product of United’s prestigious academy in many years, and has been a ‘name’ in the youth sides for some time.
German side Borussia Dortmund may threaten his future at United by offering him more chances of first team football in the Bundesliga than he’ll get in the Premier League with United.
Despite being allowed to sign a professional contract at the club on his 17th birthday, which he celebrated on August 31 of this year, Gomes is yet to sign a deal.
FC Barcelona have also been linked with the U17 World Cup winning captain. Dortmund have already poached one of Manchester’s best young English talents, signing Jadon Sancho for around £10m in the summer as he forced his way out of Manchester City in search of first team football.
SunSport claim that an Old Trafford source said: “There is chatter around the club that Dortmund are the latest side in for Gomes.
“He is pals with Jadon Sancho and that could be something that tips the scales on whether he stays or goes.”
First team football is certainly more likely at Dortmund, with a huge emphasis on young talent coming through there and the German club knowing the potential profit from a player like Gomes is worth promising chances in the long-term, as they have done with Sancho.
However, there are few genuine fears that Gomes will leave United. He’s been at the club for more than a decade and is well-grounded, patient and has a good support circle around him despite the recent hype.
