Ander Herrera delighted with Marcos Rojo’s return to action at Manchester United

Ander Herrera has expressed his delight at seeing teammate Marcos Rojo back in action at Manchester United.

The Argentine suffered knee ligament damage against Anderlecht back in April and spent over seven months on the sidelines.

He returned to action earlier this month and has impressed with a couple of confident, powerful displays against FC Basel and Watford.

And Herrera, speaking earlier this week, revealed that he told Rojo that, prior to the injury, he was one of the top five defenders in world football.

This may appear overly sycophantic from Herrera at first, but the message was designed to serve as extra motivation for Rojo to race back to his best. Receiving boosts like that – yes, ego boosts – can be salutary during a protracted spell away from the pitch, and it appears to have done the trick.

Rojo has returned ahead of schedule and, amazingly, picked up from where he left off, starring as United’s best defender in Switzerland before putting in a truly gritty, no-nonsense display at Watford that was only marred by giving away a needless penalty towards the end.

Regardless, the defender’s return to the starting XI – and indeed his very best – ahead of a hectic Christmas schedule will be absolutely crucial after he played a central role in United’s successful December spell last season.
