Jose Mourinho: Jesse Lingard did this well for Manchester United vs Arsenal

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho reserved special praise for Man of the Match player Jesse Lingard after his performance vs Arsenal.

The Red Devils were hosted by the Gunners at the Emirates in what was a hugely anticipated clash and it was Mourinho’s men who ran out 3-1 winners.

Lingard, often criticised this season for his lack of end product, managed to grab a brace after Antonio Valencia‘s opener.

The home side tried to turn things around during the match, dominating possession and shots but it was thanks to United’s efficiency that they came out on top.

Jesse’s recent good form saw him earn a starting spot in his preferred position and the Englishman certainly repaid his manager’s faith.

According to Sky Sports, Jose said: “He played well. He did what the team needed him to do, defensively and also in terms of going into finishing areas.

“We worked pre-season well and hard about playing sometimes with three at the back, sometimes four.

“When we play with two strikers we need people from the midfield that can arrive in finishing situations and that’s what Jesse did for us.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata are typically Manchester United’s go to men for the attacking midfield position but the pair have been uninspiring of late.

The Armenian’s form in particular has been puzzling, given that he started the season incredibly well but his displays dipped perhaps just as quickly and saw himself criticised by his manager.

Mata meanwhile, was normally ‘Mr Reliable’, consistently putting in at least a seven out of ten performance since his transfer to Old Trafford but has suddenly found himself underperforming this season.

Perhaps Mourinho’s slight tweak in tactics and his new transfers has not helped bring the best out of the Spaniard with fans surely concerned that this could spell the end for Juan.

Either way, both players were not even mentioned by supporters yesterday after Lingard stole the show and Jose will be hoping that the Englishman can continue his great form.
