Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho‘s tactics will only make the Manchester derby even more exciting according to Martin Keown.
Mourinho has been criticised throughout his career for being a ‘defensive’ coach who ‘parks the bus’ rather than play beautiful or exciting football.
Despite all the accusations the Portuguese manager has continued to implement a similar style of football at United.
Known for his love of counter attacks, Jose often has his teams soak up pressure vs whatever opposition then sucker punches them in the most efficient and clinical manner.
This style of play often leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of his opponents who believed they were ‘dominating’ the game and so he’s been attacked for being ‘boring’ but Keown believes it won’t affect the derby at all.
“Mourinho may see the victory over Arsenal as one of his most perfect performances. Not just because of his rivalry with Arsene Wenger, but because of how his team executed their plan.
“They pressed high, won the ball back well and packed a punch on the break. At the Emirates, Mourinho sent a message to Pep Guardiola that United are still pushing City for this title.
“United will try to break as they did against Arsenal, but City will then look to exploit United when they do. For this reason, I think we are in for a cracker.”
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City meanwhile have been hailed for their excellent attacking ability and for playing so called beautiful football.
While the Sky Blues have certainly received due credit for their performances, no silverware has yet to be claimed by the club and so they must tread carefully.
City are currently leading the league table by eight points to Mourinho’s United with the Red Devils presented with the perfect opportunity to close the gap.
The derby is already a fiercely contested one but has the added element of Jose and Pep’s own rivalry to add to the story.
Both managers have hugely downplayed their working relationships with each other but fireworks are sure to kick off during the clash.
