Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has confirmed that Manchester United and Barcelona are currently leading the race to sign Antoine Griezmann next summer.
Jose Mourinho came close to securing the Griezmann’s signature over the summer but the Frenchman decided to remain loyal to Diego Simeone instead.
But his agent has confirmed recently that, following a difficult start to the campaign, the forward’s time at Atletico Madrid was “coming to an end”.
And Balague has confirmed that Man United along with Barcelona were in the best position to sign Griezmann, adding that he wouldn’t leave in January.
“Griezmann will stay at Atletico Madrid in the New Year but Atleti are working on the assumption he is leaving next season,” he said.
“Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid want him. I don’t think he has agreed anything with any club yet.
“Atletico have spoken to Barcelona about Griezmann but, again, nothing has been agreed. The destination will be decided by Griezmann and Griezmann alone.
“He is open to all of those possibilities. At this moment in time, I feel Manchester United are Barcelona are ahead of the other suitors.”
Griezmann has identified Barcelona as his first choice option, reportedly asking them to activate his release clause, but Ernesto Valverde is thought to have cooled his interest in him following a lukewarm couple of months in front of goal.
He will only move to the Camp Nou if Barcelona make it clear that they want to hand him a central role, and you imagine the same would apply to Man United’s interest. But whether Mourinho, with the likes of Gareth Bale and Mesut Ozil available next summer, will want to guarantee the Frenchman such a crucial role just yet remains to be seen.
