Manchester United defender Daley Blind is reportedly a target of Spanish giants FC Barcelona with his contract running out.
The Netherlands international’s current deal at Man United will expire in June 2018, and Barcelona could pounce with Blind merely a back-up at Old Trafford this season.
Spanish outlet Marca suggest Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is preparing for the eventual departure of Argentinian Javier Mascherano, who has been at the club since 2010. He may be moving to the Chinese Super League as early as this January.
Blind’s best attribute is his versatality, having the ability to play at centre-back, left-back, left wing-back, defensive midfield and central midfield for United. He has played in all of those five positions for the Reds since being signed by Louis van Gaal in 2014 after playing under the Dutchman for his national side at the World Cup in Brazil that year.
Now 27, Blind has rarely been a guaranteed starter at United, and has made only 12 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side this season. But he has often been important
Marca claim that Andoni Zubizarreta, former-Barcelona director of football, was interested in signing Blind for the La Liga side, but he joined United.
Blind is a very useful player to have at the club, and Mourinho enjoys having utility players in his squads. There’s no doubt United don’t want to lose him on a free.
Whether he’ll be offered a new contract, or even sign one, will be seen soon.
