Martin Keown predicts Mesut Ozil to join Manchester United next summer

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Jose Mourinho will sign Mesut Ozil next summer to deal a big blow to Arsene Wenger.

The German still hasn’t signed a new deal at the Emirates, reportedly rejecting an offer worth £235,000 a week, and will have permission to speak with other clubs next month.

Mourinho developed a strong relationship with Ozil at Real Madrid and has expressed an interest in securing his services for free next summer.

And Keown, speaking earlier this week, admitted that the deal made sense given the 54-year-old’s established rivalry with Wenger.

“I think Jose Mourinho would love for that move to happen, for two reasons,” he said.

“One, because of the quality of the player, and two because it would be a poke in the eye for Arsene Wenger. That rivalry between the two managers has not gone away.”

Having fallen just short of Manchester City back in 2012, Sir Alex Ferguson went and signed Arsenal’s best player over the summer, and it proved to be the difference during the campaign that followed.

And with Pep Guardiola’s superior array of creative options quickly rendering this season’s title race a dead rubber already, it would only be logical for Mourinho to follow suit ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

You sense Ozil would be tempted to reunite with the manager who oversaw the finest spell of his career – this time to confound those who don’t appreciate his talent on these shores.
