Manchester United target Nabil Fekir admits he is open to leaving Lyon

Lyon forward and Manchester United target Nabil Fekir has name-checked Old Trafford as one of his potential next destinations.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a superb campaign under manager Bruno Génésio, matching last season’s total of 14 goals after just 21 appearances.

He has attracted interest from Arsenal, Man United and a variety of Spanish clubs ahead of the January transfer window as a result.

And Fekir, when asked about his future, noted that he would be open to joining United at some point further down the line, adding that there was no specific club he wanted to join at this moment in time.

“Spain, with Real [Madrid], Barcelona & Atletico [Madrid] who are the big clubs,” he said.

“After that there is England: Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal. I don’t have a specific club [I want to go to].

“Is this my last season at Lyon? I don’t know what the future holds for me. I’ve still got two years left on my contract. So, I’m still Lyonnais.”

The 24-year-old could indeed serve as a reliable solution to the creative deficit engendered by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s slump in form over the last few months.

He is a nimble, bold force on the ball, blessed with a superb low centre of gravity and immense turning speed. The rate at which he goes through the gears is superb to watch and, as this season shows, his prowess in front of goal is only improving.

The most important aspect of his game, however, lies with his attitude. If you’ve forgotten about it, just watch this video and you’ll understand.

Fekir actually managed to stop a game of football purely through his cage-rattling skills and sheer arrogant brilliance. He had been goading the home fans and players all evening with a cabaret of fancy footwork, snide gestures and darting runs past helpless defenders, culminating eventually in Saint Etienne – the manager, players, supporters, everything – imploding and suffering a 5-0 defeat.

His ability to take centre stage and bend proceedings in his direction so emphatically cannot be underestimated. And the contrast with Mkhitaryan’s ghostly demeanour is hard to ignore. This is a man with an attitude to match his ability on the pitch.
